Keyboards differ by the type of mechanism (or switch) they use to record keystrokes. Basic, budget models typically use cheap rubber dome switches which can feel mushy to press, require the keys to be pressed down fully to register the keypress and degrade over time. More expensive scissor switch keyboards feel more uniform and have a shallower keystroke. Mechanical switch keyboards are the premium option; every key has its own sturdy spring mechanism making them the most durable type of keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are the most expensive type of keyboard but offer the best tactile feedback and are favoured by touch typists and gamers.

Design is another differentiating factor with keyboards differing both in terms of their layout and the number and type of available keys. Beyond the standard QWERTY keys, some keyboards include a dedicated number pad and many come with a set of multimedia keys for easy media control and playback. Ergonomic keyboards are designed to help reduce stress and strain on your wrist and finger joints. Their keys are laid out to allow your hands to be positioned naturally during typing and many models have additional features such as padded wrist rests and sloping or curved keys. They cost more than standard keyboards but can significantly reduce the risk of injury for heavy typists.

There are also specialist gaming keyboards which feature premium designs, fast responsive times and programmable hot keys or swappable keys. Many of these are built to exacting standards and are intended for competitive use. As well as eye-catching designs they often come with a raft of extras and customisation capabilities such as backlight control and anti-ghosting which allows multiple keystrokes to be detected simultaneously.
