When shopping for a laptop, factor the type of processor the laptop comes with. You'll want to pick a laptop with enough power and speed to complete the tasks you need to accomplish. The two main processor brands are Intel and AMD, with varying levels of performance for different tasks.

Graphics cards for gaming & professional applications

If you're looking for a gaming laptop or need to run professional CAD or CGI applications, look for a laptop that features a superior, branded graphics card from AMD, Intel or Nvidia rather than a standard integrated card. These will offer superior performance and provide the best visuals and frame rates possible.

Operating systems & connectivity options

Most laptops currently ship with the popular Windows 10 operating system which is available in both Home and Pro editions. There are alternative operating systems on some laptops however - Chromebooks run on Chrome OS and Apple MacBooks use the macOS operating system. Consider the quantity and type of connectivity options you'll need, such as HDMI or DisplayPort ports, ethernet ports, and USB ports.

Storage, warranty & payment options

As for storage, think about the volume and type of files you need to save. Laptops with 256Gb or 512Gb storage are most common but hi res image or video files can quickly swallow up your disk's storage capacity so you either need to choose a model with a higher capacity drive or invest in external storage instead. Consider the warranty and flexible payment options available when making your purchase.

Selecting the Perfect Tablet

Operating systems & 2-in-1 devices

There are three main operating systems to pick from; Android, iOS and Windows. Android is Google’s OS and is found on a wide variety of tablets from a range of manufacturers. iOS is Apple’s operating system and is only found on iPad tablets. Windows tablets offer a PC-like experience. Consider 2-in-1 devices with detachable or rotatable keyboards for added versatility.

Size, weight & battery life

Size and weight might be important considerations for you, especially if you’re a frequent traveller and you want something thin and lightweight you can easily tuck into your hand luggage. Don’t overlook battery life, particularly if you’ll be spending a lot of time away from a power socket.

Screen quality and storage capacity

Another important feature to assess is the screen. Look at both screen size and image quality. The tablet’s built-in storage determines how much space you have available to store your field, images, videos, music and other data on your device. Consider your storage needs and available options for expansion.

Performance and connectivity

Performance will largely be dictated by a combination of the tablet’s processor and memory (RAM). Connectivity is very important too. Pretty much all tablets come with both WiFi and Bluetooth nowadays but there are different flavours of these available. Some tablets provide cellular 4G or 5G connectivity via a SIM card slot.

Ports, interfaces & cameras

Ports and interfaces are worth looking at if you want to connect your tablet to other devices. Many tablets have a 3.5mm port to connect wired headphones or earphones. Other ports that are often included are USB, HDMI or mini HDMI ports. Are you planning to take photos, record videos or jump on video calls? If so, you’ll want a tablet with a decent camera or cameras.

Sound quality & warranty

Sound from almost all tablets is underwhelming as there simply isn’t the physical space in the tablet’s chassis to incorporate decent size speakers. For the best sound quality use a good set of headphones or external speakers. Finally, consider the warranty options available for your tablet purchase for peace of mind.
