Types of network cables

Network cables connect one network device to another as well as any shared peripherals such as printers or scanners to a network. There are a number of different types of network cables and most networks still rely on cables for data transfer. All the network cables we supply are original branded products direct from the manufacturer. We don’t stock third party or compatible cables so you can be confident about both the quality and compatibility with your equipment.

Twisted pair cables

Twisted pair cables are made up of two insulated copper wires that are twisted together to cancel out electromagnetic interfaces from external sources. Typically used for Ethernet networks, there are shielded and unshielded twisted pair cable products. Crossover cables are another type of Ethernet cable used to directly connect devices of the same type.

Patch cables

Patch cables are used to route signals between electronic or optical devices. They’re usually quite short and are available in a wide range of colours.

Optical cables

Optical fibre cables transmit data via pulses of light. They are more expensive than other cable types but have higher bandwidth and can transmit data over longer distances.

Coaxial cables

Coaxial cables are commonly used for transmitting TV signals. They can be bent and twisted (within limits) without affecting the signal.

Buying network cables

When shopping for a network cable, there are sometimes a choice of lengths as well as colours which can help you distinguish what’s what in the typical ‘sea of cabling’ often found in a rack of IT equipment. Some cables are sold in multipacks at slightly discounted pricing, handy when you need to buy in quantity.
