Network transceivers (an abbreviation for transmitter-receiver) send and receive both analogue and digital signals within a local area network. Transceivers are commonly built into network interface cards (NICs) but some networks require external transceiver modules. As their name implies, media extender and repeater devices are designed to increase a network's range and coverage by relaying data transmitted from a network's base router or access point to reach areas that were previously out of bounds or hard to wire for example.
