Keyboards differ by the type of mechanism (or switch) they use to record keystrokes. They cost more than standard keyboards but can significantly reduce the risk of injury for heavy typists.

There are also specialist gaming keyboards which feature premium designs, fast responsive times and programmable hot keys or swappable keys. Many of these are built to exacting standards and are intended for competitive use. As well as eye-catching designs they often come with a raft of extras and customisation capabilities such as backlight control and anti-ghosting which allows multiple keystrokes to be detected simultaneously.
